Motorcycle Safety for New Riders

Motorcycle Safety for New RidersMotorcycles may be exhilarating and fuel efficient, but the truth is they present more risks than a car. While this may come as no surprise to anyone, new riders should take the following precautions to ensure their safety on their motorcycle. In addition, it is imperative to secure your new investment with a comprehensive New Jersey Motorcycle Insurance policy.

Don’t buy a bike you can’t handle.

It’s wise to start with a less powerful motorcycle when you’re a new rider. Typically, 250-300 cc engines are recommended until you get your bearings and can upgrade to a more powerful model. Don’t buy more than you can realistically manage as it will only put you in harm’s way.

Take a riding course.

Find a local riding course through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) to hone your skills. An MSF course or similar class can teach you the basics, as well as advanced techniques, such as how to perform evasive emergency maneuvers. The cost ranges from free to about $350. An approved safety course may make you eligible for an insurance discount and, in some states, to skip the road-test and/or the written test part of the licensing process, says Consumer Reports.

Wear the right gear.

Regardless of helmet laws in your state, always wear one. The statistics are sobering and there is no better way to protect yourself in the event of an accident than wearing a helmet. Furthermore, wear the right kind of jacket and boots to defend against road rash, bugs, wind, debris, etc. Remember, wearing jeans and a t-shirt might be comfortable, but it won’t protect your body if you end up in an accident.

Drive defensively.

Keep an eye out for aggressive drivers and plan your moves far in advance. As it is more difficult for other drivers to see you on a motorcycle, defensive driving is a must.
