The Most Common Problems Facing Classic Cars (And Their Solutions)As a classic car owner, it’s important to understand that not all of these prized possessions were made to withstand today’s motoring conditions.

While owning a vintage vehicle you will almost undoubtedly face problems and will require regular maintenance. There are common classic car occurrences to be prepared for and simple  maintenance tips to help you out along the way.

Classic cars are known to overheat. Some possible reasons for overheating are:

  • Low coolant level
  • Damaged cooling fan
  • Broken fan belt
  • Defective thermostat
  • Clogged radiator pipes

Ensure that coolant is filled to the required level and have it periodically inspected by a trusted mechanic. Seek out genuine spares for any faulty parts.

Braking systems have a lifespan and must get inspected periodically to ensure proper safety. Since vintage cars usually don’t have brake warning lights, it’s difficult to determine the current status of brake system. Brake pads will inevitably wear out, but to prevent premature replacement, brake liquid should always be filled up to the advised level.

Engine Breakdown

Old engines are susceptible to damage if it runs with burnt engine oil for too long. Check the level of the engine oil of your classic after about 2000 miles. Pull the dipstick out from the engine and wipe off any oil from its surface. Then, again insert it into the cavity and pull it out. This time, check the texture if the oil on the end of the stick. Every dipstick has a standard level mark noted on it to determine adequate oil quantity.

Weathered Paint

Never use harsh cleaning agents in hopes of restoring paint a classic car. Any harsh compounds will strip natural sheen of the paint and could ruin the chrome parts. Even using a dry cloth to clean dust is not recommended, since dust particles have the same effect on your car’s exterior. Always park the car in shade and when it needs a touch up, simply hose off the dirt or take it for a car wash using pH balanced car wash soap with a sponge.

Wheel Bubbling

Wheel alignment and balancing is critical for old cars. Keeping the wheels aligned and balanced allows for a smooth drive and ensures optimum lifespan of tires. This is needed to improve the handling of the car, preventing your car from pulling in one direction or vibrating strangely on the road. If bubbling or drifting occurs, alignment must be checked by a wheel specialist.

Why risk it out there on the road without proper coverage? It is in your best interest to obtain classic car insurance, so you can cruise the roads of New Jersey without worrying about an unexpected breakdown.
