Caring for Expensive Jewelry: Home CleaningIf you have a collection of expensive jewelry, you might not get the opportunity to wear each piece regularly. However, even if you don’t get the chance to wear the jewelry, it will still collect dust and grime. We’ve already covered how to care for jewelry and when to remove it, and in this article, we’ll cover how to safely clean your jewelry at home since regular upkeep is required to keep your jewelry brilliant and beautiful. Don’t forget to protect your high-value assets with a Bergen County Jewelry Insurance policy, as well.

Ammonia.

Mix 1 cup of warm water with ½ cup of ammonia in a bowl and soak gold and silver jewelry for approximately 10 minutes. This will brighten it up without causing damage to the metal itself. However, never do this on pearls, it could damage the surface in an instant.

Baking soda.

To remove built-up tarnish from your silver, make a thick paste with 1/4 cup baking soda and 2 tablespoons water. Apply with a damp sponge and gently rub, rinse, and buff dry. To polish gold jewelry, cover with a light coating of baking soda, pour a bit of vinegar over it, and rinse clean. Note: Do not use this technique with jewelry containing pearls or gem-stones, as it could damage their finish or loosen any glue, says Reader’s Digest.

Club soda.

Surprisingly, club soda can brighten up your jewels. Place your diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires in a glass of club soda overnight to make their sheen lustrous again.

Toothpaste.

For a quick fix for your dull and grimy jewelry and bands, brush on some toothpaste with a gentle toothbrush and rinse with warm water. Dry with a damp cloth and the residue will come off in no time.
