Manufacturing Academy: Combating Industry Skill Gap

Manufacturing Academy Combating Industry Skill Gap ManufactureNJ is hosting its first Young Manufacturers Summer Academy (YMSA) this week to help solve the skill gap in the industry. Local middle and high school students have the opportunity to learn about manufacturing and how to revitalize the industry with hands on activities using high-tech equipment and workshops. While there are many important factors required in operating a manufacturing business, implementing proper New Jersey Manufacturer Insurance being one of them, interest is required to sustain the industry.

The New Jersey Advanced Manufacturing Talent Network’s academy (NJIT), which is a week long, also allows students the opportunity to visit local businesses and schools such as Raritan Valley Community College and Stryker Corporation in order to get a feel for the industry and ideally, drive interest for a potential career. Further, the hands-on education provided by this program seeks to encourage the variety of professional paths that could be achieved in manufacturing.

According to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, they offer a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Technology with a concentration in mechatronics, a new name for the discipline that focuses on the advanced manufacturing of 3-D printing, robotics, automation, and more. What’s more, they boast high acceptance rates from applicants with an associate degree from local community colleges.

This development is a direct response to the shortage of skilled workers in the manufacturing industry. Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute conducted research that showed that 84 percent of manufacturing executives agree there is a drought of talent in the industry, which is in need of approximately 2.7 million workers to combat the scarcity. Increased wages have already been offered to entice employment, and officials hope that this academy provides the incentive manufacturing desperately needs.

The manufacturing business will likely undergo more change as a result of these efforts.
